Buildings are responsible for almost 50% of the UK’s energy consumption and carbon emissions and this figure continues to grow. Concern for this trend has resulted in the Department of Communities and Local Government introducing new measures in England and Wales to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings. Since October 2008, all properties – homes, commercial premises and public buildings, when bought, sold, built or rented, need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and all public buildings with over 1000m2 area with public access are required to have a Display Energy Certificate (DEC).
In 2009, new regulations concerning air conditioning systems were introduced and further requirements are due to be enforced during 2010 and 2011.
We are now working with a number of Registered Social Landlords (RSL's) developing cost effective schemes that will fulfil their obligations particularly when tenanted homes come within this regulation.
