The Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) came into effect in April 2008. The scheme makes it obligatory for every UK energy company to take necessary steps to ensure that the amount of CO2 emissions from domestic properties is reduced.
The programme is currently in effect for three years and is planned to double the level of activity of its predecessor, the Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC).
Electricity and gas suppliers are now obliged to promote and offer funding towards measures that improve energy efficiency in the home. Up until recently, loft and cavity wall insulation have dominated this area, however external wall insulation is now considered to be the next main area of focus.
The key thing to note here is that you can apply for grants and offers through Climate Energy, regardless of who supplies your gas and electricity. This could help reduce the amount of energy you use, reducing your CO2 emissions as well as helping to save money on energy bills too.
The amount energy suppliers are expected to spend in order to meet their targets is around £3.5 Billion. This represents a substantial investment opportunity for local authorities, registered social landlords & private landlords.
